Police Warn of Fraudulent SMS Regarding HGS Debts
The police have issued a warning regarding fraudulent messages being sent to vehicle owners, allegedly on behalf of the General Directorate of Highways, demanding payment for HGS (toll road) arrears.
The messages claim that the recipient has an unpaid toll and suggest clicking a link for urgent payment. However, as the police noted, these links do not belong to official government agencies and are used by scammers to obtain personal and banking data.
Messages are sent from the number +212 7 71 81 39 48. They also specify a supposed payment deadline and warn of potential sanctions.
Police urge citizens not to click on such links, not to enter personal data, and not to disclose banking or credit card information.
It is also noted that the HGS system is used in Turkey and is not applied in Northern Cyprus; therefore, such messages are fraudulent.
In case of receiving such messages, citizens are asked to report them to the police.
