The "hunger threshold" for a family of four will increase to 31,504 Turkish lira
The Public Servants' Union of Turkey and Cyprus (KTAMS) announced that as of May 31, 2025, the "hunger threshold" for a family of four will increase to 31,504 Turkish lira.
KTAMS provided a report prepared based on average dietary requirements necessary for the healthy nutrition of a family of four, obtained from the Department of Inpatient Health Institutions of the Ministry of Health, and prices provided to the union by the Statistical Institute.
According to the report, the cost of healthy nutrition per day and per month is as follows: for an adult woman — 272.55 Turkish lira per day and 8,176.50 Turkish lira per month; for an adult man — 283.43 Turkish lira per day and 8,502.90 Turkish lira per month; for a child aged 15–19 — 297.19 Turkish lira per day and 8,915.70 Turkish lira per month; for a child aged 4–6 — 196.98 Turkish lira per day and 5,909.40 Turkish lira per month.
Accordingly, the monthly "hunger threshold" for a family of four amounts to 31,504 Turkish lira.
According to the Statistical Institute, inflation in the country was 2.71% in May 2025. KTAMS President Güven Bengihan stated that the 2015 consumer price index basket used by the Statistical Institute is outdated and does not reflect current people's needs, emphasizing that it should be updated as soon as possible to calculate the cost of living more realistically.
