UN Secretary-General’s Envoy Arrives in Cyprus

Maria Angela Holguín Cuéllar, the personal envoy of United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres for Cyprus, arrived on the island last night. The Colombian diplomat is beginning a fresh round of meetings with representatives from both communities.

Her first official meeting took place this morning with the leader of the Greek Cypriot administration, Nikos Christodoulides. She is scheduled to meet with Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar on Monday. Holguín also plans to engage with the bi-communal youth committee during her stay.

Earlier this month, UN Secretary-General Guterres officially reappointed Holguín as his personal envoy on the Cyprus issue. Her new mandate began on May 12, 2025. She now has roughly two months to prepare the groundwork ahead of the upcoming five-party summit, set to take place in Geneva at the end of July.

This is Holguín’s first visit to Cyprus since her reappointment, and she is expected to remain on the island for about a week.

Following her stay in Cyprus, the envoy plans to visit Greece, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. It is still unclear whether she will meet with Johannes Hahn, who was recently appointed as the EU’s special representative on the Cyprus issue.
