Azerbaijani President Backs International Recognition of the TRNC
Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev has voiced his support for the international recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) as an independent state. In response, the TRNC’s President Ersin Tatar has publicly thanked Aliyev for his firm and encouraging stance.
President Aliyev made the statement during his address at the international forum “Towards a New World Order” held at ADA University in Baku. The event gathered more than 80 experts from 44 countries.
Aliyev highlighted Azerbaijan’s active role in helping the TRNC gain observer status in the Organization of Turkic States (OTS). He also emphasized his close and ongoing dialogue with the Turkish Cypriot leader.
He noted that it was at his invitation that President Tatar attended the informal OTS summit in Shusha — a symbolic event where the TRNC flag flew alongside those of other Turkic nations.
“We have always stood by our brothers. Our position on this issue has always been clear. We have no hidden agenda — our only goal is to help our brothers defend and preserve their state.
They have earned that right, both through their history and their actions. Our brothers and sisters in the TRNC can be confident that we will continue to stand by them in their rightful pursuit of international recognition as an independent state,” Aliyev stated.
TRNC President Ersin Tatar responded warmly to Aliyev’s remarks, calling them a source of joy and pride.
“President Ilham Aliyev’s words brought us great happiness. I thank him sincerely for the powerful and unwavering support he has shown to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
We are proud to see that our unity — in spirit, values, and as part of one nation — is growing stronger with each passing day,” Tatar said.
