TRNC President Ersin Tatar traveled to Ankara yesterday afternoon ahead of the upcoming 5+1 meeting on the Cyprus issue, set to take place in Geneva on March 17–18.

The visit to the Turkish capital was not officially announced, and no details about Tatar’s agenda have been disclosed. The Turkish Cypriot leader confirmed his departure for Turkey through his social media accounts.

According to an official decision published in the Official Gazette, Ziya Öztürkler, Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly, will serve as acting president in Tatar’s absence.

Earlier this week, the United Nations (UN) officially announced an informal 5+1 summit on the Cyprus issue, scheduled for next week in Geneva. The high-level talks will bring together representatives from both Cypriot communities, along with the three guarantor powers—Greece, Turkey, and the United Kingdom—as well as the UN.

The Geneva meeting is considered a pivotal moment in Cyprus negotiations, as it will be the first high-level discussion on the issue in 4.5 years.
