Dust from North Africa will worsen air quality in Northern Cyprus
The Meteorological Department of Northern Cyprus has warned of approaching dust masses from North Africa, which may cause temporary air pollution from October 20 to 22.
According to the department, the dust will be carried by southern and southwestern winds and will affect both coastal and inland areas of the island. During this period, concentrations of fine particles (PM10 and PM2.5) are expected to rise, which may negatively affect human health, especially for those suffering from respiratory, heart, or vascular diseases.
Meteorologists advise residents to limit outdoor exposure whenever possible, especially during daytime hours, keep windows closed, use air filtration systems, and avoid intensive physical activity outdoors. In case of worsening health, specialists recommend consulting a doctor.
Such phenomena are not uncommon in the region: Cyprus regularly experiences the effects of dust masses carried by winds from the Sahara. The last episode occurred in the summer, when air pollution levels also exceeded norms.
The Meteorological Department urges residents to monitor updates on its official website and promptly respond to atmospheric condition warnings.
