Dust from North Africa to Blanket Northern Cyprus This Weekend
The Meteorology Department of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has issued an urgent air quality warning due to an incoming dust cloud from North Africa. The dust is expected to settle over the region and remain in the atmosphere throughout the weekend.
According to the forecast, the warning is in effect from midnight on Saturday, May 17, until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, May 18.
“Dust carried from North Africa may lead to increased air pollution in our region. We advise residents—especially those with respiratory issues or allergies—to take necessary precautions,” the department stated.
This marks the second dust event this month. A similar warning was issued just last week, on May 9, when another wave of Saharan dust reached the island.
