The media reported a GPS system failure at Ercan Airport
There was reportedly a glitch in the GPS navigation system at Ercan Airport. As a result of the incident, one of the flights couldn't land for about half an hour.
According to local media reports, the pilot of the Istanbul-Er can flight reported the malfunctions during the flight. He stated that due to a GPS system malfunction during the landing approach, the plane had to take off again. Afterward, the aircraft circled the airspace for about half an hour before it was able to land.
The incident has already been commented on by Mustafa Sofi, Director of the Civil Aviation Department. According to the specialist, the recent disruptions in the GPS system in the region are due to "signal jammers and wars.”
Presumably, the GPS was showing the aircraft at a different location than its actual position, hence issuing a warning not to land, which forced the approaching aircraft to gain altitude again, causing panic among the passengers on board.
“We do not have a forecast for when the GPS problem in Ercan will be resolved,” said the head of the department, adding that similar problems are encountered at the airfields of the Republic of Cyprus.
The International Civil Aviation Organization has already issued warnings regarding this matter.
