Council of Ministers Postpones Mass Strike in Northern Cyprus
The Council of Ministers of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has announced the postponement of widespread strikes that were due to take place today at Famagusta and Kyrenia ports, Ercan Airport, and hospitals across the country.
Under the cabinet’s decision, all planned strike actions have been deferred for 60 days. The official notice of postponement was published in the Official Gazette on May 2, 2025.
This decision comes amid significant unrest over the government's controversial move to legalize the wearing of hijabs by children in state schools. The policy, introduced by the ruling coalition, has sparked protests and strong backlash from unions and civil society.
On Monday, unions had called for a general strike to take place today, with nearly 100 professional associations and civil organizations expected to participate.
It's important to note that, while the general strike in ports, airports, and hospitals has been delayed, teachers' protests are still taking place today at schools around Northern Cyprus.
