Turkey abolishes border visas in response to the principle of reciprocity

Turkey has decided to abandon the practice of issuing visas directly at the border, citing the principle of reciprocity in visa policy. The measure affects citizens of countries that do not provide similar conditions to Turkish citizens when entering their territory.
According to Turkish media, the decision is aimed at unifying the visa regime and eliminating asymmetry in international travel. Authorities in Ankara emphasize that entry into the country remains possible; however, foreigners will now need to obtain a visa in advance through electronic systems or consulates.
The authorities believe that this step will strengthen border control and bring visa rules in line with international practice, as well as serve as a signal to countries that apply restrictive measures against Turkish citizens.
