Murat Karalar, Chairman of the Cyprus Turkish Taxi Drivers Associations Federation, has demanded a 40% increase in fares for taxis and shared taxis (dolmush).

According to him, the rise should align with the planned increase in student transportation fees.

Karalar called on the Minister of Public Works and Transport, Erhan Arıklı, to apply the proposed 40% hike to the taxi and dolmush sectors as well.

Furthermore, the Federation is demanding:

  • Urgent legislative changes to protect the industry;
  • Definition of clear criteria for passenger transportation;
  • Regulations governing the activities of tourist buses and minibuses;
  • Increased police enforcement in the transportation sector.

According to Karalar, it is essential to stop practices that he believes are damaging the taxi sector.
