TRNC President Strongly Condemns Parliament Fight
The President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Ersin Tatar, has strongly condemned the incident that occurred during the Republic Assembly session the previous day. After a conflict between lawmakers escalated into a physical altercation, the parliament suspended its work.
"The attacks and verbal abuse that took place in the Republican Assembly of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, a symbol of our century-old national struggle, the honor and dignity of Turkish Cypriots, and the highest institution of the people's will and sovereignty, are completely unacceptable and equate to intimidation," said President Tatar.
Tatar emphasized that it is both "natural and necessary" for political parties represented in the parliament, as well as MPs, to express their political opinions and criticism within the framework of democratic rules.
"I strongly condemn these acts of tyranny. I call on MPs to act with common sense and in a manner befitting the dignity of a parliament," the TRNC leader concluded.
Earlier reports indicated that the General Assembly of the TRNC Parliament had suspended its work again due to a conflict between the ruling party and the opposition. The verbal exchange turned into a physical confrontation.
All parliamentary sessions have been postponed for one week. The committee had been scheduled to begin working on the 2025 budget the day before the incident.
