TRNC introduces sentence reduction system for prisoners
Changes have been made to prison legislation in the TRNC: a phased reduction of sentences can now be applied to convicts depending on their behavior and labor.
The new regulation, published in the official gazette, provides for a so-called "gradual pardon" system. According to it:
- for sentences up to 2 years, a reduction of 2 days per month is possible,
- from 2 to 6 years — up to 3 months per year,
- over 6 years — up to 4 months per year.
However, the innovation does not apply to serious crimes, including murder, attempted murder, drug offenses, robbery, and sexual offenses.
Authorities note that the changes are aimed at encouraging discipline and prisoner involvement in labor activities.
