Tufan Erhürman urges people to follow authorities' updates and stay indoors unless necessary
On December 9, 2025, the TRNC President Tufan Erhürman issued a written statement urging residents in Northern Cyprus to monitor announcements from authorized bodies and, whenever possible, to avoid going outside due to expected heavy rainfall.
Erhürman stated that he met with the mayors of Lefkoşa, Girne, Güzelyurt-Alayköy, Çatalköy-Esentepe, Dikmen, and Güzelyurt, as well as with the Director of the Meteorological Department, the Chief of Police, the Chairman of the Civil Defense Organization, and government representatives.
According to him, all operational teams have been working in the field since night. Necessary measures are being taken regarding the Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu Hospital. A crisis headquarters has been established in the Güzelyurt-Alayköy municipality to assess the situation.
The Meteorological Department warned of the possibility of intensified rainfall; heavy rain is expected to begin in the afternoon and continue until morning, with precipitation intensity potentially increasing until 17:00 the next day.
Erhürman extended condolences to those affected and thanked the services involved. He urged citizens to closely follow official announcements and government recommendations, and especially in periods and areas with heavy rainfall, to refrain from going outdoors unless strictly necessary.
