Damage from fires in the TRNC exceeded one million lira for the week
Between May 20th and 26th, a total of 15 fires and 20 incidents requiring the involvement of special services occurred in the TRNC. Rescuers have issued reminders about precautionary measures to prevent fires.
According to a statement by the fire department, the total damage from fires for the week amounted to 1,182,100 Turkish lira.
Possible causes of fires include short circuits in the electrical system, discarded cigarette butts, fires getting out of control during cleanup, sparks from wires, and other factors.
Due to the increase in the number of fires, the TRNC fire department published a memorandum on the necessary fire prevention measures.
In particular, rescuers urge people not to discard unextinguished cigarette butts into trash cans, onto road shoulders, in forests, or onto flammable materials.
It is also noted that simultaneous use of high-current devices (such as irons, refrigerators, hairdryers, etc.) in several sockets increases the risk of fire.
"We ask you to call 199 if you see dangerous substations, electrical poles, electrical wires that may come into contact with each other, or tree branches that may fall on electrical wires in bad weather conditions," stated the firefighters' message.
It is reminded that from May 1st to October 31st, all types of fires are prohibited in Northern Cyprus, even for cleaning purposes.
"Citizens who notice signs of smoke or fire are asked to immediately call the fire brigade hotline 199, the forest fire hotline 177, or the police assistance line 155," rescuers emphasized.
