Chlorine gas leak at Teknecik power plant: workers hospitalized, investigation launched
A chlorine gas leak occurred at the Teknecik power plant on 2 September during a chemical disposal operation. The incident happened in the morning, between 10:50 and 11:20 according to different reports. Civil Defense personnel, security services, and fire brigades were dispatched to the scene.
Preliminary information suggests that three to four plant workers were affected. They developed symptoms of poisoning, including nausea and difficulty breathing. All of them were taken to Girne Akçiçek Hospital, where they received medical treatment.
An investigation has been launched by the Kyrenia Criminal Police Department. Specialists are examining the circumstances of the leak and possible safety violations.
The chairman of the KIB-TEK workers’ union (El-Sen), Ahmet Tuğcu, stated that the incident revealed serious organizational problems at the plant. According to him, the tender for chlorine gas disposal was conducted non-transparently and awarded to a company with a questionable reputation. He demanded the publication of gas composition test results and urged the authorities to ensure transparency in the investigation.
Tuğcu also noted that many employees have still not undergone medical check-ups, including cancer screening. He emphasized that workers’ health must be a priority and that safety issues cannot be postponed.
The union insists that the authorities and KIB-TEK management must take measures to prevent similar incidents in the future and ensure proper working conditions at this strategically important power plant.
