Passenger Detained with Ammunition at Ercan Airport: Arrest Extended by 2 Days
In Northern Cyprus, at Ercan Airport, a passenger identified as T.Z. was detained on February 17, 2026, on suspicion of "illegal import, transportation, and possession of explosives." During a departure inspection, a single 9mm live round was discovered in his possession.
According to police data, at approximately 15:45, an X-ray scanner at "Kale 8" identified the ammunition marked "MKE 12 9P" inside a backpack. The ammunition was seized as evidence, and the suspect was apprehended in the act of committing a crime.
The investigation established that the round was brought into the TRNC territory on February 12, 2026, through the Girne Tourist Port by the detainee.
Police officer D.H. informed the court that the investigation is in its early stages and additional testimonies are required. Following the police petition, Judge Z.Y.B. ordered T.Z. to remain in custody for an additional 2 days.
