On Labor Day, a joint event of the unions of two municipalities will take place in the Buffer Zone
The unions of two municipalities will hold a joint event in honor of International Workers' Solidarity Day. The meeting will take place on May 1st at 11:00 at the Solidarity House in the Ledra Palace in the buffer zone.
The event will be attended by non-governmental organizations PEO, DEV-İŞ, KTAMS, KTÖS, KTOEÖS, BES, KOOP-SEN, DAÜ-SEN, members of the World Federation of Trade Unions.
A joint statement about the meeting was made by the president of DEV-İŞ, Coral Asham, on behalf of the Turkish Cypriot unions, and by the general secretary of PEO, Sotiroulla Charalambous, on behalf of the Greek Cypriot unions.
The union leader from the TRNC also reminded that those planning to be in the buffer zone during the May 1st event should have their identification documents with them for passage.
The general secretary of PEO stated that this year, May 1st is celebrated by workers both in Cyprus and around the world.
Sotiroulla Charalambous also called on the leaders of Cyprus to invite the UN Secretary-General António Guterres to the island to resume negotiations on Cyprus.
It is also reported that on May 1st, organizations and civil society institutions of Northern Cyprus will gather at 09:30 in Kugulu Park in Nicosia and at 11:00 proceed to the Ledra Palace crossing point to meet participants from the Republic of Cyprus in the buffer zone.
The unions of Greek Cypriots will gather for a preliminary meeting in Eleftheria Square at 10:00 and will also come to the buffer zone by 11:00.
After the meeting, a joint declaration will be read in two languages, followed by a concert by Kulisa Teodoru and Umut Albayrak.
