In Güzelyurt, mukhtars reported youth unemployment, water shortages, and road problems
The mukhtars of the Güzelyurt district highlighted the most pressing local issues — high youth unemployment, water supply interruptions, and poor road conditions, reports Gündem Kıbrıs (August 26, 2025).
According to representatives of several settlements, young people are leaving the region due to a lack of job opportunities; the mukhtar of İsmetpaşa, Ahmet Kolcu, stressed the need for expanding social housing and creating jobs. The mukhtar of Gayretköy, Serdar Ünal, along with representatives of several villages, warned of regular summer interruptions in drinking and irrigation water supply. The mukhtar of Kalkanlı, Kemal Kısalıoğlu, pointed out that plots allocated back in 2017 still lack electricity, water, and access roads.
Municipal representatives also demand improved road safety: asphalting, lighting, installation of cameras, and speed bumps in accident-prone areas. The mukhtar of Güneşköy, Akay Darbaz, stated that the lighting project for the roundabout is already ready but has not yet started; according to him, this leads to frequent accidents. Several villages also note the shortage of modernized playgrounds and social areas.
For residents, this means risks to agriculture (crop losses during water shortages), higher accident rates in unlit areas, and increased migration of the working-age population. According to the mukhtars, decisive initiatives require urgent government response and funding.
