On January 30, 2026, the chairman of the Karpas Protection Association, Dursun Çebi, announced support for the government’s decision to provide payments to producers in areas where drought has not been officially declared.

In a written statement, Çebi noted that despite the absence of an official drought declaration in Karpas in Northern Cyprus, serious crop losses are observed in coastal areas. He also pointed to damage caused by wildlife and donkeys.

According to Çebi, the decision by the Council of Ministers to provide a payment of 300 Turkish lira per dönüm for the affected areas is an important step. The decision was made taking into account the recommendations of the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

Çebi emphasized that the measure will support farmers who continue working under difficult conditions and expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Ünal Üstel, Minister Yüsayin Çavuş, members of the Council of Ministers, and the Union of Turkish Cypriot Farmers for the decision.

For residents of the region, this means the possibility of receiving direct compensation for confirmed crop losses in areas without official drought status, which may partially cover costs for restoring crops and maintaining farms.
