Kyrenia Conducts Independent Analysis of Sea Water Samples from Beaches
The Kyrenia Municipality has announced the results of its own analysis of seawater samples taken from public beaches. This time, a private laboratory conducted the tests.
The final results of the water tests for swimming areas were shared on social media by Kyrenia’s mayor, Murat Şenkul.
The mayor highlighted that, by law, municipalities are not authorized to analyze and publish these data. However, the results were released because “the health of citizens takes precedence over legal norms.”
- “We regularly conduct testing and are confident that if we find any beach with water quality exceeding acceptable limits, we will close that beach without hesitation.”
It is important to note that last week, results from water samples taken from beaches across the country in July were published. These results raised more questions than answers and attracted criticism from local residents, officials, and environmentalists.
Former President of the Biologists’ Association, Hasan Sarpten, issued a written statement on the matter.
According to the scientist, although the legal authority for such tests rests with the Ministry of Health, the seawater analysis results were announced by the Deputy Prime Minister and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Environment.
- “They even audaciously claimed that the second samples from 12 beaches, initially deemed polluted, somehow turned out to be ‘clean’,” said the biologist.
Despite the confusion surrounding the conflicting data, results from the state laboratory indicate that nearly all beaches in the TRNC meet the required standards.
