Two fires in Nicosia and Ortaköy caused by a cigarette butt and short circuit
On August 25, 2025, accidental fires in the capital of Northern Cyprus — Nicosia — as well as in the Ortaköy area caused material damage. The incidents were reported by the newspaper Gündem Kıbrıs.
In Nicosia, on Selvi Street (Beylerbeyi Selvi Sokak), a fire broke out in the garden of a residential house. According to preliminary data, the fire started from a smoldering cigarette butt that fell onto a chair in a gazebo. As a result, the gazebo itself, a wooden table, chairs, and several electrical cables caught fire. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze. An investigation into the incident is underway.
On the same day, around 11:00 a.m., in Ortaköy, near Etik Hospital, a parked car with license plate JV 290 caught fire in the staff parking lot on Dr. Remzi Gönenç Street. It is assumed that the fire was caused by a short circuit in the electrical system of the engine compartment. Hospital staff provided first aid using a fire extinguisher. Firefighters later extinguished the blaze. As a result of the incident, the engine compartment, plastic components, hood cover, and headlights of the vehicle were damaged. In addition, the windshield cracked due to high heat. An investigation into the circumstances is ongoing.
Both incidents occurred during the day and were met with a prompt response from the services. In both cases, the fires were extinguished quickly, but material damage had already been done.
