On February 5, 2026, Mehmetcan Ekinci was detained in Lefkoşa in Northern Cyprus on charges of misappropriating a vehicle entrusted to him, police reported.

According to the police, ahead of the court hearing, İsmet Yeşildal, an officer of the Lefkoşa Criminal Investigation Department, outlined the circumstances of the case. In October 2025 in Lefkoşa, the director of a car gallery identified as E.K. handed over a Smart passenger car with license plate MA 379 to Ekinci for use.

The police allege that the suspect sold the vehicle to a person with the initials M.Ö. for 50,000 Turkish lira, which, according to the investigation, constitutes the crime of misappropriation of entrusted property.

The complaint was filed on February 5, 2026, and the suspect was detained the same day in Lefkoşa. According to the investigation, statements will be taken, the vehicle will be seized as material evidence, and CCTV recordings will also be reviewed.

The police requested a three-day detention to continue the investigation. Judge Kürşat Rauf granted the request and ordered that the suspect be remanded in custody for three days.
