An X-ray scanner installed at Kyrenia port: TRNC authorities strengthen border control

The TRNC authorities announced additional measures against organized crime and the strengthening of control at entry points. Interior Minister Dursun Oğuz said that the key changes concern sea and border crossings, including the port of Kyrenia.
According to the minister, an X-ray scanner for inspecting cargo and baggage has already been installed at the port — such equipment had not previously been available there, which made the route vulnerable. The system is expected to become operational in the coming weeks. In parallel, the launch of thermal cameras is planned, as well as the introduction of facial recognition upon entry into the country — in addition to the existing fingerprint identification. Part of the equipment, it is specified, will be supplied from Turkey.
Oğuz emphasized that the authorities intend to act firmly and prevent the strengthening of criminal networks. Among the priorities, he named the expansion of data exchange and joint operations with Turkish structures, as well as tighter checks at checkpoints.
Separately, the minister addressed the business community and the media. He advised entrepreneurs who face threats not to remain silent and to cooperate with the police. The media, in turn, were asked to be more cautious when publishing materials that could unintentionally promote the activities of criminal groups.
It is also reported that the authorities have begun revising police legislation — taking into account population growth, new forms of crime, and technological development.
