The “Safe School” project is launching in Northern Cyprus
With the start of the new academic year, the General Directorate of Police (Polis Genel Müdürlüğü), together with the Ministry of National Education (Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı), is launching the “Safe School” project (Güvenli Okul Projesi). Measures will begin to take effect around educational institutions from September 2025.
Within the framework of the project, police patrol services near schools will be reinforced, a system for ensuring road order and pedestrian safety will be organized, and checks will be carried out on public transport carrying students. Control will also be tightened over outlets selling tobacco products near school areas.
The Ministry of National Education, together with school administrations and parent committees, will organize seminars for students, parents, and staff on topics such as road safety, drug addiction prevention, safe internet use, combating cyberbullying and peer harassment, as well as measures to prevent children from being involved in criminal activity.
For rapid communication between schools and the police, a web-based system will be introduced to ensure quick information sharing and immediate response to risks. The General Directorate of Police plans to combine the implementation of the “Safe School” project with the “Volunteer Traffic Supervision” program (Gönüllü Trafik Denetçiliği) as part of community-supported initiatives.
Practical significance for residents: parents and school communities can expect more frequent patrols and inspections of school transport, as well as new channels for promptly notifying the police.
