A new tourism initiative titled “Island Cyprus” (“Ada Kıbrıs”) was officially launched at a special ceremony in Istanbul, aiming to boost tourism in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

The event was attended by TRNC President Ersin Tatar, Vice President of Turkey Cevdet Yılmaz, TRNC Prime Minister Ünal Üstel, TRNC Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment Fikri Ataoğlu, and Turkey’s Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy.

In his speech, Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz highlighted the strong bond between Turkey and the TRNC:

“There is a unity of hearts and destinies between Turkey and the TRNC that goes beyond mere historical ties. Northern Cyprus stands out with its unique nature, rich culture, and warm-hearted people.”

A promotional video shown at the ceremony featured Northern Cyprus’s historic landmarks, breathtaking landscapes, and traditional flavors.

“From Kyrenia Castle to the ancient city of Salamis, from the Büyük Han to the narrow streets of Nicosia, from Famagusta Port to the island’s citrus groves—Northern Cyprus offers an unforgettable blend of history, nature, and culture,” said Yılmaz.

He also recalled that Turkey welcomed over 62 million tourists last year, generating more than $61 billion in revenue, making it the 4th most visited country in the world.

“The TRNC Tourism Master Plan and the ‘Island Cyprus’ campaign are concrete steps in line with our shared vision to develop the tourism sector,” he added.

Yılmaz emphasized that the master plan is not only about tourism growth but also about protecting cultural heritage, promoting sustainable development, and creating new job opportunities.

Turkey has allocated 122 million Turkish lira to support this initiative. The funding has gone toward key projects such as restoring the Famagusta city walls, Kyrenia Castle, and the ancient city of Salamis, as well as enhancing museums and archaeological sites.

In recent years, tourism development grants provided through this campaign have helped integrate many heritage sites into the tourism sector, supported alternative tourism types, and contributed to regional development.

“It’s incredibly encouraging to see the TRNC embarking on a structured, effective, and sustainable tourism journey,” Yılmaz stated.

He also extended a heartfelt invitation to Turkish citizens who haven’t yet visited Northern Cyprus:

“Come and see these treasures for yourself—whether by plane or ferry.”

It was also noted that Turkish Airlines is preparing to offer easier and more affordable travel options to the TRNC in the near future.

The Island Cyprus campaign, spearheaded by the TRNC Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment and supported by Turkey’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, aims to promote the island’s cultural heritage, traditions, and way of life. The project was first introduced last year, with a focus on seasonal gastronomy and cultural tourism.
