In TRNC, rent and food prices are rising faster than inflation
Statistical Institute data for February 2026 showed that price increases for a number of basic goods and services significantly exceed the overall inflation rate.
Annual inflation in the country stood at 40.22%, but figures in some key categories were much higher.
The sharpest increase was recorded in the housing sector: rents rose by 56.61% over the year. A significant price hike is also observed in food products — prices for bread and cereals increased by 45.63%.
Price increases were also noted in other areas:
- healthcare — +48.42%,
- recreation and culture — +56.09%.
In some services, the growth was even more noticeable: for example, the cost of ferry transportation increased by more than 118%.
Economists note that the price increases are particularly hard on households, as housing, food, and medical services are becoming more expensive faster than general inflation, increasing pressure on family budgets.
