The Only Olympic Pool in Northern Cyprus to Reopen After Renovation
The Olympic swimming pool at Near East University in Northern Cyprus is set to reopen after undergoing extensive renovations. As the first and only Olympic-sized indoor pool in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), it will officially resume operations on December 19.
The facility will serve as a training hub where the country’s top swimmers will coach athletes aspiring to compete in the Olympic Games.
Located on the Near East University campus, the Olympic swimming pool first opened in 1997. Since then, it has trained around 15,000 professional swimmers and enthusiasts.
Following its renovation, the pool will continue its mission of developing athletes who will represent the TRNC in national and international swimming competitions.
The complex is fully equipped to host both national and international events. It includes a 50x21-meter Olympic-sized pool, seating for 1,000 spectators, and a diving platform. Thanks to its central heating system, the pool will operate year-round, offering training programs for swimmers of all ages.
Beyond swimming, the facility will provide medical services and rehabilitation programs such as kinesiotherapy. Additionally, a fitness center and access to a sports psychologist will be available to athletes.
The pool’s operations will be overseen by Avni Cancurt, a highly experienced swimming coach who has successfully trained athletes competing at the national team level.
