TRNC to Open First Antiquities Museum on Archaeological Dig Site
Northern Cyprus will soon host its first antiquities exhibition directly at an archaeological dig site. Artifacts discovered in the tombs of King Kaleburnu will be showcased at the TRNC's first museum, “Exhibition on Site.”
Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Environment Minister Fikri Ataoğlu recently visited the excavation site to gather information about the artifacts uncovered during the tomb research and about the museum planned for the area.
The excavations at Kaleburnu Royal Hill and in the Negnopole area are being conducted in collaboration with the Department of Antiquities and Museums and the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Cultural Heritage Research Center.
The museum, planned to be established at the excavation site, will feature pottery and bronze artifacts, human skeletons, and tools used for processing wool, such as spindles, among other items.
This museum is expected to be the first project in Cyprus to offer an “Exhibition on Site” feature, in line with the World Cultural Heritage concept. It will also include a “Memory Room” and an applied research department. Visitors will be able to view documentary films produced throughout the excavation and research phases.
- “The work done here is very important for us and future generations. We will continue to advance this work,” stated the minister.
Fikri Ataoğlu also expressed gratitude to the Republic of Turkey and officials from the Development and Economic Cooperation Office (DECO) for their support of the excavation project.
