Several major forest fires have occurred in the TRNC: rescuers raise the alarm
Yesterday, several significant forest fires broke out in Northern Cyprus. Firefighting efforts are still ongoing in several areas. Due to the region's exceptionally hot weather, the number of fires is increasing, prompting fire services to urge the public to remain vigilant.
The largest forest fire occurred near the Caves of Noon in the Injirli Cave, southeast of the village of Cinarli. The fire started around 12:50 and quickly spread over a vast area.
In addition to the police and firefighters, specialists from the Department of Forestry, civil defense teams, local residents, tractors, and tanker trucks belonging to the regional municipality were mobilized for firefighting efforts. The battle against the fire continued throughout the day, with the fire being brought under control by evening.
According to the police press service, the perimeter of the fire has been cordoned off, but burning continues in some areas.
As a result of the fire, unharvested barley and wheat, bales, carob trees, olive trees, pines, and macchia vegetation covering an area of about two thousand hectares were destroyed.
Another serious fire broke out on the hill of Uzun above the Vadili landfill in the Mesarya municipality.
Local authorities were forced to appeal to the public for assistance.
"It is important for our citizens who have tractors to immediately go to the scene of the fire to help the firefighters and municipal teams and to monitor the fire," the municipality's statement said.
Another fire raged in the south of the village of Alevkaya. Police and fire brigades, as well as tanker trucks belonging to the Department of Forestry, Civil Defense Organization, and regional municipalities, were mobilized to extinguish the fire on steep and rugged slopes.
Efforts were made to prevent the spread of fire to forested areas, and measures were taken to protect the environment.
It is also noted that according to the fire service, a total of 13 fires occurred in the TRNC territory yesterday.
It has been established that the causes of the fires were short circuits in electrical wiring, discarded unextinguished cigarette butts, sparks from electrical transformers and wires, as well as gas leaks.
Due to the increase in air temperature, the fire department urged people to be cautious about possible fires in urban and rural areas and called on the public to take precautionary measures.
The statement emphasizes that in case of detecting signs of fire or smoke. It is necessary to immediately call 199 for the fire brigade, 155 for the police emergency number, 177 for forest fires, or 101 for civil defense and report it to the authorities.
