Turkey ceases minting of 1 and 5 kuruş coins

The Turkish State Mint and Printing House (Darphane ve Damga Matbaası) has completely stopped the production of 1 and 5 kuruş coins as of the beginning of 2026. The reason is that their production cost has exceeded their face value.
According to the publication T24, the production of 25 kuruş coins was already discontinued in 2024, and now the smallest denominations will gradually disappear from circulation as well.
From 2026, the mint will continue to produce only:
- 5 Turkish Liras
- 1 Turkish Lira
- 50 kuruş
- 10 kuruş
According to Darphane data, coin production has become economically unviable. For example, the minting cost of:
- 1 Lira exceeds 4 Liras,
- 50 kuruş — more than 3 Liras.
In January, 2.07 million 50-kuruş coins were issued, but only 180,000 10-kuruş coins. Meanwhile, 10 million 5-Lira coins, which continue to circulate after being issued for the Republic's 100th anniversary, were minted in January.
The decision reflects rising production costs amidst inflation and the increasing price of metals.
