January 2025 Breaks Heat Records in Northern Cyprus, but February Could Be the Coldest Yet
Meteorologists have reported extreme weather records in Northern Cyprus. September 2024 was the rainiest in the last 15 years, January 2025 became the warmest ever recorded, and forecasts suggest that February could be one of the coldest and windiest months on record.
According to Professor Barış Önol of Istanbul Technical University, the first 27 days of January 2025 were the warmest in Turkey’s meteorological history, surpassing the previous record set in January 2024 by 0.11°C. Northern Cyprus experienced similar conditions, with rainfall reaching only 17% of the seasonal average.
However, the weather is about to take a sharp turn. The Meteorology Department’s latest forecast predicts that Northern Cyprus will soon be affected by a cold and wet air mass. Daytime temperatures will range between +13°C and +16°C, while heavy showers and morning frosts are expected from February 9 onward.
More rain is expected between February 10 and 12, with intermittent downpours. A similar pattern is unfolding in the Republic of Cyprus, where snow in the Troodos Mountains has reached a depth of 16 cm.
Authorities are urging residents to take precautions as temperatures drop, especially during severe cold spells.
