The number of flamingos in southern Cyprus has decreased by approximately 31% since 2013
A study conducted in southern Cyprus and published on January 5, 2026, showed that since 2013 the number of flamingos visiting the salt lakes of Larnaca and Akrotiri has decreased by about 31%.
The newspaper “Politis” cites data provided by the relevant authorities. The main reasons for the decline are identified as drought, deterioration of water quality in the lakes, and factors related to human activity.
It is noted that certain plans are being developed to improve the condition of these water bodies, although details are not disclosed in the publication.
The publication does not specify any direct consequences for residents of Northern Cyprus. It only reports on the dynamics of the flamingo population in the salt lakes of Larnaca and Akrotiri and on intentions to improve their condition.
