Around Seven Earthquakes Recorded Over the Weekend in Cyprus

Over the past weekend, Cyprus experienced around seven earthquakes. The majority of the tremors were felt in the Republic of Cyprus, particularly in Paphos and Limassol. There is a chance of stronger earthquakes occurring in the near future.

According to local media, the series of tremors began early on Saturday morning. In total, more than seven small earthquakes were reported by the Geological Service, although only three of them were felt by residents.

Just before 10 AM, the people of Limassol and Paphos experienced the tremors firsthand. The magnitudes of the earthquakes were 3.3, 3.6, and 3.7 on the Richter scale.

According to the Kandilli Observatory, the first earthquake struck at 9:49 AM, followed by tremors at 9:52 AM and 10:17 AM, occurring just a few minutes apart.

It is believed that the epicenters of the earthquakes were located at depths of around 13.02, 6.7, and 10.17 kilometers beneath the surface.

The Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) also reported two additional earthquakes at 10:36 AM and 10:49 AM, with magnitudes of 3.7 and 3.9, respectively. Furthermore, another 3.3-magnitude earthquake was recorded at 9:58 AM in the Mediterranean Sea, at a depth of 5.9 kilometers.

While all the tremors occurred and were felt solely within the Republic of Cyprus, Tunc Adanır, the President of the Turkish Cypriot Engineers and Architects Union (KTMMOB), highlighted warnings from scientists and experts about the possibility of a 7-magnitude earthquake in Cyprus, particularly in the TRNC. According to experts, the regions of İskele and Lefke are at a higher risk.
