Strike at Ercan Airport Postponed for Two Months
The strike planned for today by the Air Traffic Controllers Union at Ercan Airport has been postponed. By a decision of the Council of Ministers of the TRNC, the protest action at the airport has been deferred for 60 days.
The decision made by the Council of Ministers was published this morning in the “Official Gazette." According to the document, the decision was taken based on the powers granted by the provision of the strikes and referendums article in the Collective Labor Agreement Law. In the view of the Council of Ministers, the strike of civil aviation services and airports is subversive and could threaten public safety, as well as disrupt the functioning of the country's essential services.
Consequently, it has been decided that the 24-hour strike planned by the Air Traffic Controllers Union and other unions to commence on May 27, 2024, at the air traffic control unit of Ercan Airport. The strike will be postponed for 60 days, as stated in the announcement.
Recall that the Air Traffic Controllers Union of the TRNC (HTKS) announced its intention to hold a strike at Ercan Airport at the end of April.
The President of the union, Cem Kapysiz, warned that air traffic controllers would go on strike if allowances were not paid to the staff at the current exchange rate.
Earlier, the Air Traffic Controllers Union of the TRNC (HTKS) declared a strike at Ercan Airport in early March. However, the protest action was also called off then, without even commencing. By a decision of the Council of Ministers of the TRNC, the protest action was postponed for 60 days.
After the decision was published in the “Official Gazette” and came into effect, the strike at the air traffic control unit of Ercan Airport was canceled due to its “disruptive nature to civil aviation.”
