Residents of Northern Cyprus, faced with yet another power outage after an explosion at the Güneşköy transformer substation, once again voiced their desire for electricity to come from Turkey via cable. People say they are tired of constant blackouts and suffering. In their eyes, Turkey, just as it solved the water issue, could also be the salvation in the energy matter.

This is what interviewed citizens said:

Hasan Kanarya emphasized: “We should have implemented this project a long time ago. The electricity problem is not being solved, on the contrary — it is getting worse. Every day there’s a new outage, a new complaint.” Ekrem Güven Canbaz added: “We are people with sick and small children. We live in constant hardship. Turkey solved the water problem, let help also come with electricity. The project should be launched as soon as possible.”

Osman Aliusta admitted: “We have a serious electricity problem — both in summer and winter. If we cannot solve it ourselves, we must focus on the cable connection project from Turkey. It makes more sense to invest funds in Teknecik rather than in all sorts of surveillance systems.”

Hüseyin İçigen stressed: “If our leadership is not able to solve the problem, let Turkey help. I fully support this project and want it to be realized as soon as possible.”

Ergun Soyal noted: “Electricity is the only way of salvation. Turkey solved our water problems, and now it will find a way out again. We all suffer — I want this project to become reality.”

Adnan Işiman pointed to the persistent hope of the Cypriot people: “We are confident that electricity coming from Turkey will put an end to this suffering. Unfortunately, however, the energy service may hinder this project due to personal interests.”

Mehmet Bulak emphasized: “Turkey must connect us. Water came — everything changed for the better, and the same should happen with electricity. The state must either strongly invest in our capacities, or go for partial privatization of KIBTEK, or connect the cable — the choice is obvious.”

Zehra Dinlemez said: “Our power grid system is unstable. We constantly suffer. This project must be implemented as soon as possible to solve the problem once and for all.”

Erol Ordali remarked: “We have no possibility to build a new station, and the current capacities are overloaded. This project is our only way out of the crisis.”
