The Kibris Postasi newspaper conducted a survey before the start of the school year to determine the current cost of essential items for students.

The disappointing conclusion: the standard student kit this year has increased more than twice compared to last year and now costs 6,845 TL. A year ago, a similar kit cost 2,950 TL, and in 2022, it was 1,693 TL.

Thus, a parent with a minimum wage is forced to spend more than a quarter of their income on school supplies.

Here are examples of some items from the 2024 school kit.

• The most affordable item among stationery is the pencil, which costs 20 TL. However, a mechanical pencil is sold for 375 TL, and a marker for 55 TL. Additionally, an eraser costs 20 TL, a pencil sharpener is 80 TL, and correction fluid is 80 TL.
• Materials for drawing and painting have also increased in price. A set of colored chalks costs 175 TL, watercolor is 325 TL, pastel is 300 TL, and a drawing book is 200 TL.
• A small ring binder is sold for 30 TL, a large ring binder for 260 TL, and file paper for 140 TL.
• In the stationery category, rulers cost 50 TL, tape is 6.5 TL, glue is 100 TL, scissors are 55 TL, and folders are 115 TL.
• Backpacks are sold for an average price ranging from 500 TL to 2,000 TL, lunch boxes from 799 TL, and water bottles/thermoses from 500 TL.
