What is VAT in Cyprus
VAT stands for Value Added Tax. It is included in the final price of goods and is paid by everyone. These funds contribute to social projects of the state, but tourists are unable to benefit from them and therefore have the opportunity in Cyprus, as in many other countries, to refund this part of the cost of purchased goods.
Who is eligible for VAT refund in Cyprus
The right to a refund is granted only to individuals who do not use social benefits. Thus, citizens of the Republic of Cyprus cannot take advantage of this option.
Moreover, the European Union has a unified system for redistributing many financial flows collected through taxation. Therefore, citizens of other EU countries are also not eligible for VAT refunds.
All other categories of tourists with a stay under a tourist visa not exceeding three consecutive months are eligible for VAT refunds.
How much is VAT in Cyprus
VAT rates vary by country. In the Republic of Cyprus, VAT is 19% of the product price. However, the minimum purchase amount must be €50 on a single receipt, and the receipt must not be older than three months.
Where to shop for VAT-refunded goods
These include almost all major stores. Additionally, small retail outlets also participate in the program. In all cases, the logo of one of the refund programs—Global Refund Cyprus, Euro Refund Cyprus, Global Blue Cyprus, or Premier Tax Free—will be displayed at the store entrance or cash desk.
