Banana Farmers in Paphos on the Brink of Ruin Due to Water Shortages
Banana farmers in the Paphos region are on the verge of financial collapse as a lack of water threatens to destroy their crops. The current water allocation for irrigation is simply not enough to sustain banana plantations.
Moses Peyiotis, head of the Paphos Banana Growers' Association, raised the alarm during a meeting attended by local MPs and the Mayor of Akamas, Marinos Lambrou.
Farmers say that ongoing drought conditions are severely impacting their income, leaving many producers struggling to survive. They’ve been warning for some time that the water they receive is far below what’s needed. Similar concerns were voiced during a meeting back in January.
As the situation worsens, banana growers are preparing to issue formal demands to the government. They are also considering protest actions if their appeals go unheard.
“We’ve been cultivating bananas for years, and we’re simply asking for the water supply to be maintained at the levels we've had until now so our crops can survive and continue to produce fruit,” the farmers said.
