Cyprus is among the European countries with a high share of women employed in science and technology. According to Eurostat data for 2025, women make up 51.8% of workers in these sectors on the island.

Across the European Union as a whole, more than 81.6 million people aged 15 to 74 are employed in the science and technology sector. Compared with 2024, the number of workers increased by 1.8%, while over the past decade growth exceeded 25%.

Women continue to play an increasingly visible role in the development of science and technology. In 2025, they accounted for 52.5% of all workers in the sector in the EU — about 42.8 million people. Over ten years, the number of women in the industry has grown by almost 28%.

Professions in science and technology include fields that require high qualifications and specialized knowledge in the natural sciences, engineering, social sciences and the humanities.

The regions with the highest share of women in the science and technology sector in Europe were Latvia (62.4%), Hungary’s Great Plain and North region (61.1%) and Estonia (60.5%). The lowest figures were recorded in Corsica, Malta and Italy’s Centro region.

Despite overall progress, women remain underrepresented among scientists and engineers. In 2025, their share in these professions across the EU was 40.8%. However, over the past ten years, the number of women in engineering and scientific roles has increased by more than half — from 5.3 million to 8.2 million.

Experts note that the growing participation of women in science and technology contributes to innovation, improves economic competitiveness and helps reduce the gender gap in the labour market.
