British warship will not depart for Cyprus until at least next week
The British warship HMS Dragon will not leave Portsmouth and is expected to depart for the Eastern Mediterranean no earlier than next week, British media report, citing Western officials.
The vessel is currently in Portsmouth, southern England, where it is being stocked with ammunition and necessary equipment prior to deployment. According to officials, it is practically impossible to prepare the warship any faster.
The destroyer is being sent to bolster the defense of the British base in Cyprus amid rising regional tensions.
HMS Dragon is one of the most advanced ships in the British fleet. A Type 45 destroyer, it is designed for anti-air and anti-missile defense, including protection against drones and missiles.
Wildcat helicopters, armed with Martlet missiles for counter-drone operations, are also expected to arrive.
