The District Court of Paphos has reached a verdict in a case concerning a fatal car accident that took place 18 years ago. A British driver has been fined 2,500 euros.

The incident, which sparked legal proceedings in 2025, occurred on November 17, 2006.

The defendant was driving a vehicle on the main road leading from the Agios Neophytos Monastery in Tala towards Tremithousa. His brother was in the passenger seat, while his brother’s wife and son were seated in the back.

The car skidded on a slippery stretch of road, causing it to swerve into the opposite lane and overturn off the side of the road. The female passenger tragically suffered fatal injuries and passed away.

A breathalyzer test revealed that the driver was intoxicated at the time of the accident.

The case was officially registered with the court on September 20, 2024.

The court also pointed out that since 2006, the defendant had visited Cyprus three times without any arrests—except for his most recent visit in September 2024.

The 18-year delay in bringing the case to court played a significant role in the sentencing decision.

In addition to the statute of limitations, the court took into account the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.

It was concluded that the cause of the accident was a slippery road, exacerbated by the absence of guardrails and sidewalks. Furthermore, expert testimony confirmed that the vehicle was not speeding at the time.

In addition to the 2,500-euro fine, the court imposed eight penalty points on the driver’s license and suspended it for three months. A further fine of 200 euros and two penalty points were added for driving under the influence.
