Village near Paphos Airport demands compensation

The issue of compensation measures for areas neighboring airports has once again come to the forefront: municipal and community authorities around Paphos Airport are preparing new steps.
The municipality of Yeroskipou, within whose boundaries the airport ended up after the local government reform, commissioned and received a study from an expert company on what compensatory benefits the city should receive due to the airport’s operation.
The study highlights key problems for nearby areas:
- increased burden due to rising passenger traffic and expansion of airport infrastructure;
- noise impact;
- traffic congestion and transport load in certain settlements of the municipality (Timi and Acheleia are mentioned);
- possible impact on air quality due to fuel emissions from hundreds of flights.
The municipality is considering various compensation options, including a special “per passenger” fee, funding of infrastructure projects, greening initiatives, improvement of the road network leading to the airport, as well as support for social and cultural initiatives.
