Dozens of Buildings Across Cyprus to Illuminate in Red
On Tuesday evening, dozens of buildings across Cyprus will be illuminated in red to commemorate World Thalassemia Day, observed on May 8th.
According to a statement by the All-Cyprus Thalassemia Association, the World Health Organization established this day to stimulate scientific research for improving disease treatment and to raise public awareness about the challenges faced by patients requiring blood transfusions.
Throughout the year, the association has planned a series of events, starting with illuminating buildings in red, the symbol of blood donation, as well as a range of educational activities, such as the All-Cyprus Thalassemia Conference in November.
Through its programs and actions, the association aims to support people living with thalassemia, promote blood donation, and establish proper healthcare and social security policies for patients.
Thalassemia is a severe inherited blood disorder passed down from parents to children through genes. According to the World Health Organization, there are over 250 million thalassemia carriers worldwide, with approximately 300,000 people suffering from thalassemia.
