Makarios Hospital’s Pediatric Ward in Cyprus 90% Full Due to Respiratory Infections
Cyprus is experiencing a surge in respiratory infections among children, with the pediatric department at Makarios Hospital now 90% full. Most of the patients are infants and children under the age of four, who are receiving treatment for respiratory illnesses.
Dr. Avraam Elias, the director of the pediatric clinic, reported that 30 children are currently being treated in the department.
In recent days, there has been a sharp rise in hospital admissions, largely due to the weather conditions. The majority of the children are suffering from upper respiratory tract infections, including colds, laryngitis, otitis, and tonsillitis.
"About 30 children have been admitted, but many are being discharged, while others are being admitted in their place. These are the typical infections we see at this time of year," said Dr. Elias.
The doctor also urged parents to keep children with symptoms at home, as these pathogens are highly contagious, particularly among young children. If a child under two months develops a fever, parents are advised to call a pediatrician for a home visit.
Regarding COVID-19, there are currently only a few isolated cases—one or two children with the virus have been admitted to the wards.
