Two cars stuck in Larnaca Salt Lake after failed crossing attempt
The Municipality of Larnaca, the Department of Environment, and the Game and Fauna Service reported a new incident of illegal entry into Larnaca Salt Lake in Cyprus, which resulted in two vehicles being trapped in the mud.
According to the municipality’s statement, Larnaca Salt Lake is one of the most important natural sites in Cyprus. It is part of the NATURA 2000 network (the European network of protected areas) and the Ramsar Convention, serving as a crucial habitat for migratory birds. The lake has been under strict protection in accordance with national and European legislation since 1997.
According to the report by Dialogos Media, both vehicles are registered to one owner who is currently abroad; the cars were used by his son. The young man tried to drive across the lake, but one vehicle got stuck in the rain-softened ground. When attempting to assist, the second vehicle also became bogged down.
The Game and Fauna Service imposed an extrajudicial fine of €2,000 for actions that damaged the habitat, in accordance with the Laws on the Protection and Management of Wild Birds and Hunting 2003–2021. The Department of Environment, together with other services, is determining ways to immediately remove the vehicles to prevent further damage to the wetland. The police were notified on Wednesday.
