Environmentalists Concerned About Series of Animal Disappearances and Government Inaction
The Environmentalists Movement – Citizens’ Cooperation expressed serious concern that authorities have so far failed to investigate several cases of animal disappearances, citing a “prolonged lack of results.”
In a statement published on February 9, 2026, environmentalists criticized the lack of progress in locating animals that went missing several weeks ago. According to them, the absence of clear and responsible information from competent authorities “pushes citizens toward the most worrying thoughts about the fate of animals and undermines the sense of justice and trust in state institutions.”
The statement was prompted by at least two cases:
- the disappearance of a colony of cats from the supermarket area in Nicosia on January 22;
- the disappearance of a female dog in Kofinou on January 25, leaving behind two newborn puppies.
Despite official complaints filed and, as environmentalists claim, “substantial information provided by citizens,” there have been no tangible results of the investigation so far. The organization emphasizes that these are not isolated incidents — according to their data, cases of animal disappearances occur almost daily, indicating serious inefficiency in the existing protection mechanisms.
Activists warn that such inaction creates an atmosphere of impunity and call for an immediate and comprehensive investigation. The statement emphasizes the need for full and urgent enforcement of legislation on animal protection and welfare.
