Experts Warn of the Dangers of Improper Air Conditioner Use

In summer, air conditioners become the main salvation from the heat, but doctors remind us: excessive and improper use can negatively affect health. According to Dr. Haris Armeftis, Director of the Cyprus Pulmonology Society, in addition to cold-like symptoms, prolonged exposure to cold and dry air can cause dehydration, dry skin and eyes, and in some cases even lead to a dangerous infection known as “Legionnaires’ disease.”
This disease is caused by the bacterium Legionella, which multiplies in poorly maintained air conditioning systems. Infection occurs when tiny droplets of water containing the microorganism are inhaled. Those at risk include people with weakened immune systems, smokers, patients with chronic lung diseases, and those who abuse alcohol.
The symptoms of the disease may resemble those of a common cold or pneumonia: cough, fever, weakness. In such cases, doctors recommend drinking more fluids, rinsing the nose with saline solutions, and, if necessary, using vasoconstrictor or antihistamine medications.
Legionnaires’ disease was first recorded in 1976 in the USA, during a convention of the “American Legion” in Philadelphia. At that time, more than two hundred people were infected, and dozens died. Today, doctors remind everyone that to avoid risks, it is important to maintain air conditioners regularly and not overuse their cooling capacity.
