Electricians "Hide Pools" from Inspections: Residents' Safety at Risk

The chairman of the Cyprus Electricians Association, Yorgos Kyriakou, stated before the parliamentary Committee on Internal Affairs that there are serious violations in the inspection of electrical systems in new homes. According to him, some specialists intentionally omit pools from project documentation to avoid mandatory checks by the Electricity Authority.
This concerns cases where expensive pools (costing around €30,000) and their electromechanical installations are simply left out of the plans. As a result, such installations do not undergo inspection, creating a direct threat to human life and health.
Kyriakou also noted a gap in the control system: even if an inspector identifies a discrepancy, no measures are taken because current legislation allows electricians to "remove" installations from the plans.
During the discussion of new regulations, it was emphasized that mandatory supervision of electromechanical works in new and renovated buildings is being introduced. According to Committee Chairman Aris Damianou, this will enhance safety and bring Cyprus in line with European standards.
The president of the Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber (ETEK), Konstantinos Constantinou, called the changes a "historic step," closing a legislative gap that had existed for more than 20 years.
The new system provides for mandatory oversight by the architect, civil engineer, electrician, and mechanic to ensure the safety and transparency of construction projects.
