The EU supported a voluntary return programme for migrants from Cyprus
A voluntary return programme for migrants continues to operate in Cyprus, implemented with financial support from the European Union. The initiative is aimed at assisting foreign nationals who wish to return legally and safely to their countries of origin.
The programme is funded by the EU and implemented with the participation of the Cypriot authorities and international organisations. It provides coverage of return-related expenses, as well as reintegration support — including assistance with housing, education or starting employment after return.
According to the authorities, voluntary return is considered a more humane and effective alternative to forced deportation. Participation in the programme is possible only on a voluntary basis, following an individual assessment of each case.
Particular attention is paid to vulnerable categories of migrants — families with children, victims of exploitation and people with medical or social problems. The EU emphasises that such projects help both to reduce migration pressure on host countries and to support stability in countries of origin.
Cyprus remains one of the EU countries facing high migration pressure, and the authorities state that voluntary return programmes will continue to be expanded with the support of Brussels.
